SUBSTITUTION: keeping a scene's destination while replacing the causal chain that produced it. The only one of the three change-types that is actually a crime — translation and compression are honest.Daenerys. The Meereen chapters are a sustained argument that a liberator who cannot govern will eventually reach for fire, because fire is the only tool that never fails her. The show kept the fire and deleted the argument, so the turn reads as a mood swing instead of an inevitability.
Where it does not holdKubrick's The Shining replaces King's causal chain wholesale — the alcoholism and the hotel's possession arc both go — and the film is stronger. So the crime is not substitution; it is substitution with nothing put back. A replaced engine works. A removed one does not.

RETRACTION IS NOT SUBVERSION. Subversion complicates an investment. Retraction invalidates it retroactively. They feel adjacent in the moment and are opposite operations.Jaime: 'the things I did, I did for her.' An arc about a man who lost the hand he built an identity around, cancelled rather than complicated.
Where it does not holdWalter White's 'I did it for me' looks like a retraction of the family justification and lands as the series' best line, because five seasons had already shown the audience the lie. Retraction works when the character is the last one to admit what we already knew.

Structure
AN IMAGE IS THE PAYMENT FOR ACCUMULATED PRESSURE. Work backward from the spectacle and the accumulation gets cut, because accumulation is expensive and does not screenshot. The result looks like a climax and carries no charge.GoT S8's images were always the plan; the seasons of pressure that would have funded them were never made. Contrast Rook's Rest, which lands because Rhaenys had two seasons of being the queen who never was.
Where it does not holdAndor funds its spectacle with hours of procedural pressure first, and the prison break and Rix Road land as payment rather than display. Same franchise, same budget scale, opposite construction order.

World
ESTABLISHED FRICTION IS A CURRENCY, AND CONVENIENCE SPENDS IT RETROACTIVELY. A world that has charged for distance, injury or scarcity has been collecting payments from its audience; waiving the charge to reach a scene faster refunds every payment already made.Early on, a continent is priced honestly: a journey costs whole episodes, people die on the road, and a raven is the fastest thing alive. Later the same distances are crossed between cuts. What breaks is not realism — it is that every earlier journey retroactively becomes something the story could have skipped, so the suffering on those roads was optional all along.
Where it does not holdHyperspace is free from the opening film and nobody has ever complained, because the rate was published in the first scene and never revised. The law is not that distance must cost. It is that a rate, once charged, cannot be quietly changed — and the more grounded the world, the larger the balance it is holding.

Method
AN ADAPTATION MEASURES ITS WRITERS ONLY AFTER THE SOURCE RUNS OUT. While a finished text is underneath it the room is being graded on dramatisation; the moment the substrate ends it is graded on construction, and those are different skills.Early seasons drawn from completed novels are excellent, and the same room produces markedly weaker work once it passes the last published book. Nothing about the personnel changed. What changed is which job they were doing: turning existing causation into scenes, versus generating causation from nothing.
Where it does not holdRooms exist that were strongest after the source ran out, having spent the adapted years learning a world well enough to extend it. The law does not predict a fall. It says the second half is the only part that tests the writers, and the first half is not evidence about them either way.

Structure
TENSION DECAYS WHEN CONSEQUENCE IS REVERSIBLE, AND IT DECAYS ACROSS THE WHOLE WORK RATHER THAN THE SCENE. An audience learns the exchange rate within two or three resets and discounts every later stake automatically.A death undone at no cost teaches an audience that death is a scene transition rather than an event. The lesson is not confined to that character: every subsequent peril is priced at the new rate, including ones the writers fully intend to honour. This is why a single cost-free reversal can flatten stakes for seasons while every individual scene still appears to work.
Where it does not holdSerialised forms have run permanent reversibility for decades and kept their readers, because the contract was published up front and the tension relocated from whether to how. The law is about changing the rate mid-work, which is the same mechanism that makes collapsing established friction so expensive.
