Three peoples held the Great Basin, and they held it by knowing it — not by wandering it. The most common thing said about them is the thing most worth correcting.

Northern Paiute (Numu, “the people”), Western Shoshone (Newe) and Washoe (Wašiw) held the Great Basin. Their year was a fixed circuit — spring marsh and fish runs, summer seed meadows, the autumn piñon harvest, communal antelope and rabbit drives, then winter camps at low elevation living on the stores.
why it is Nevada’s This is the baseline every later chapter is measured against. The circuit depended on four things a wagon road destroys: grass-seed meadows, piñon groves, marsh, and the water at the springs.

Nomadic is the wrong word and it does real damage. The round was a repeating annual circuit over known, returned-to ground, timed to a harvest calendar — closer to a farmer’s year than to wandering. “Seasonal round” is the term the ethnography uses. Calling it nomadism is precisely what made it arguable later that nobody held the land.

Northern Paiute puha, Western Shoshone poha: power. Not a god and not quite a spirit, but a force present in the world and distributed unevenly through it — in the sun and moon, in thunder, in particular mountains and particular springs. One who holds it is a puha’gant; the journey to seek it is puha po. Power came unsought, usually in a dream, often in solitude or fasting, and it was dangerous to receive and dangerous to refuse — ignoring the call could make you ill. Then came apprenticeship under a practising puha’gant. Men and women both, and specialised: curing, weather, finding what was lost, foretelling, helping the hunt.
why it is Nevada’s This is the correction that matters most in this chapter, and it is a correction to what I wrote in the row above. Power is a property of specific places — which means the landscape is not scenery that religion happens in front of. The landscape is the distribution map of the sacred. The seasonal round is not only a food calendar moving between resources; it is movement across ground that is itself charged, and the routes are travelled for both reasons at once.

Northern Paiute bands are named for their food. The people at Walker Lake are Agai Dicutta Numu, the trout eaters, for the Lahontan cutthroat; a smaller group are Pakwidökadö, the chub eaters. At Pyramid Lake they are Kuyui Dokado, the cui-ui eaters. At Stillwater, Toi Ticutta, the cattail eaters. Around Yerington the groups are named for grass bulbs and for wild onions.
why it is Nevada’s This is the deepest correction on the page and it reframes everything above and below it. Identity here is not territory in the first instance and not lineage — it is diet, which is really a precise statement about which stretch of ground you know how to live on. That is a far more exact claim than a border, and it explains why the seasonal round is not a route but an identity. And it sets a trap for everything that follows: in a naming system built on food, taking the food away does not merely impoverish a people. It turns the band’s own name into a memorial. The trout eaters lost the trout when Walker Lake fell and went saline; the cui-ui eaters nearly lost the cui-ui to Derby Dam. Both peoples are still called after fish that the diversions almost finished.

Sorcery — the power to work harm — was one of the specialisations a puha’gant might hold, alongside curing and prophecy. It was not a separate category of person but a capacity of the same office, because power that heals is power that can kill. And the office carried lethal accountability: a practitioner who lost too many patients was sometimes killed. Under that theory of power, repeated failure is not incompetence, it is evidence.
why it is Nevada’s The imported word flattens two entirely different things — a real and coherent concept of harmful power, and the settler habit of filing any Native religious practice under superstition. What actually existed here is internal, structural, and proportionate to its own theory: the community’s remedy for a dangerous practitioner was execution, which is the nearest real analogue to a witchcraft accusation in the Great Basin, and it is nothing like a moral panic.

The communal antelope drive was run by a duina’-puha’gant, an antelope charmer, who dreamed the herd into the corral. The dreaming was not a ceremony performed before the work. It was the work — the drive was the ritual, not a hunting technique with a ritual attached to it.
why it is Nevada’s Put this next to my own first row and the fault shows. I corrected “nomadic lifestyle” to “seasonal round,” which was right, and then described that round purely as a calendar of calories — spring fish, summer seed, autumn piñon. That is the same error one level up: it is Julian Steward’s framing, that these were people at bare subsistence with a culture meagre in content and simple in structure, and it was the dominant research programme in Basin anthropology for decades. The antelope drive refuses it in one image. The most economically important collective act of the year was directed by a man on the strength of a dream, and no account that treats this as foraging can hold that fact.

The Sierra Nevada strips the Pacific storms before they clear the crest. What falls east of it runs to sinks and playas and evaporates — no water in the Great Basin reaches the sea. Four to nine inches a year across most of the state.
why it is Nevada’s Nevada is the driest state in the union and the mountains are the reason. The same barrier that made it dry made it late: it is the last part of the West outsiders entered, and the reason is on the map.
Frémont established the closed hydrography in 1843–44 and named it the Great Basin. Before that the region was drawn with an imaginary river — the Buenaventura — running through it to the Pacific.

Carvings on tufa at Winnemucca Lake have been dated to somewhere between about 10,500 and 14,800 years before present — the oldest dated rock art in North America. The tufa they are cut into was exposed when the lake dropped on its own, thousands of years ago.
why it is Nevada’s And the lake is now permanently dry, because of a dam built in 1905. The oldest human art on the continent sits on a lakebed that federal engineering finished off. Everything else on this page is downstream of that sentence — the water rows, the Orr Ditch rows, the band names that became memorials. This is the first thing that happened here and the thing most recently damaged, and it is the same water in both clauses.

why it is Nevada’s Write this the usual way and it is an archaeology story about the oldest mummy in North America. Write it correctly and it is a restitution story, and this volume already has a chapter about who wins those and how long it takes. The relevant date is not the carbon date. It is 2016 — the same year the Walker River and Pyramid Lake tribes won polling places in federal court. Two returns in one year, both after decades, both requiring litigation.

The south runs on the Colorado. The north runs on four rivers that all die in the desert — Truckee, Carson, Walker, Humboldt. Nothing connects them. There is no north-south water in Nevada and there never has been. And the northern four are terminal: no outlet to the sea, so every drop is used, evaporated, or sitting in a sink.
why it is Nevada’s This is why the two halves of the state have never been one polity in any practical sense, and why the page keeps splitting along the same seam. It is also why northern water is a zero-sum fight in a way Colorado water is not. On a terminal river there is no downstream to pass a problem to — what one user takes is simply gone, which is the physical fact underneath Derby Dam, Pyramid Lake, Walker Lake and the trout eaters losing the trout. The south has a different arithmetic entirely: Nevada holds the smallest Colorado allocation of the seven states but gets return-flow credits, so water treated and sent back to Lake Mead counts against the total. Indoor use is close to free and only outdoor use truly consumes, which is why southern conservation is almost entirely about tearing out grass.

Genetic adaptation to environment is real and established — but the established case is altitude, not aridity. Tibetans carry an EPAS1 variant, inherited from Denisovans, that holds haemoglobin low while maintaining oxygen delivery. Andeans solved the same problem with higher haemoglobin and larger chest volume. Ethiopian highlanders have a third pattern. Three populations, three independent genetic solutions to one stressor. Humidity is not on that list: there is no established genetic adaptation of the airway to dry air. The nearest real finding is that nasal aperture width correlates with ancestral climate — narrower in cold, dry regions — which is a modest morphological effect, not a difference in how lungs work.
why it is Nevada’s And what actually dominates is developmental rather than hereditary. Growing up at altitude increases lung volume regardless of ancestry. Acclimatisation to dry air takes weeks. Childhood infection, indoor air, allergen history and this week’s pollen explain far more about any given airway than ancestry does — and individual variation within any population dwarfs the average difference between populations, so a group figure tells you essentially nothing about one person. This row exists because the volume has now walked up to this line three separate times: Julian Steward inferring a meagre culture from a thin food supply, the local-colour writers doing it to Appalachia, and the suggestion that the West was dim because of who ended up there. The line is clean and worth stating once. Environment shapes what a body has to cope with, and what a society has to organise around. It does not shape what people are like. Which leaves the good version of the claim standing, and it is the better one anyway: the Numu seasonal round, the emigrants’ timing problem, the night crossing of the Forty Mile Desert, the Basque summer on the mountain and the data centre’s free cooling are all the same phenomenon — the desert setting a schedule. That is behaviour and engineering. It is not blood.

Egypt is an exotic-river desert: the Nile carries water into the Sahara from the Ethiopian highlands and the equatorial lakes, runs through, and exits to the sea. The Great Basin is an endorheic snowmelt desert. No river enters from outside. No water leaves except by evaporation. Every drop is local snow, caught on ranges inside the system and released on a schedule.
why it is Nevada’s Two consequences, and they explain most of this volume. First, water here is vertical rather than horizontal. Egypt’s arrives from far away at ground level, so settlement is linear and packed along a few per cent of the land. Nevada’s arrives as snowpack on the range above you and comes down in spring — which is why settlement is punctate, in a dotted line of springs along the range front, and why the seasonal round moved up and down rather than along. Second, nothing flushes. In a closed basin salts concentrate instead of exiting, so every terminal lake gets saltier as it shrinks — Walker, Pyramid, Owens. Egypt’s irrigation salts go to the Mediterranean; Nevada’s stay. That is why the water damage in this volume is so much harder to reverse than the same damage would be on a through-flowing river: there is no downstream to send the problem to. And the deeper version: crustal extension made all of it at once. The ranges that catch the snow, the faults that moved hot fluid and left the ore and the geothermal heat, the closed basins that concentrated the lithium brine, and the thin dry air that gives the solar gain and the thirty-degree night. Aridity is not an obstacle sitting on top of the wealth — it is the concentrating mechanism that made the wealth. The desert does not withhold, it concentrates: ore, brine, heat, sunlight and salt, all by the same means. The one thing it cannot concentrate is water, because water is what it spends doing the concentrating.

the vernacular, and what still works
Egyptian passive cooling runs on a windcatcher — the malqaf — pulling reliable prevailing wind down a shaft, often over water. The Great Basin’s free resource is different: a thirty to forty degree drop between afternoon and pre-dawn, with afternoon relative humidity routinely in the low teens. So the dominant strategy here is night-flush ventilation over thermal mass — shut the building during the day, open it after dark, and let masonry discharge into cold dry air. Evaporative cooling works spectacularly at that humidity and barely at all in a humid climate, at a fraction of the energy of refrigerated air. And under these skies a surface with high emissivity in the atmospheric window radiates to a sky effectively around 230 kelvin and can sit several degrees BELOW air temperature. That sounds too good and it is simply true: the everyday proof is frost on a car roof on a night when the air never reached freezing. Under cloud the window closes and the effect vanishes.
why it is Nevada’s 🔴 THE CORRECTION THAT REORDERS THE WHOLE ANSWER: Cairo is a HOT desert and Reno is a COLD one. At four and a half thousand feet this climate is heating-dominated — more energy goes into keeping a house warm over a year than cool. Egyptian vernacular is optimised for a problem you have for three months. So you do not copy the malqaf; you take the physics — mass, evaporation, radiation, shading — and re-weight it for a place that has to survive January. What transfers completely is mass with night flush, and it works BETTER here than in Egypt, because Cairo’s nights are warmer than yours. Evaporative cooling transfers and is exceptional at this humidity — the salsabil, water running over carved marble into a windcatcher’s airstream, is the direct ancestor of the swamp cooler. Radiative night-sky cooling transfers and you have the better sky. Shading transfers INVERTED: the mashrabiya blocks sun year-round because Cairo never wants it, whereas at 39½° north you block the high summer sun and admit the low winter one, and the west façade is the worst here because afternoon sun lands on peak heat. Courtyards only half transfer — a courtyard is a night-cooled air reservoir in summer and extra exposed surface in winter, so the Great Basin version has to be closeable: a sunspace, not an open sahn. And the vernacular already had all of it. Deep porches on every side, tall ceilings with transoms so air stratifies and moves with the doors shut, thick adobe and stone at Genoa and Dayton and in Capriola’s own 1929 shop on Commercial Street, bright tin roofs. And note HOW the surviving adobe survived, because this is where the Egyptian model actually breaks: mud brick assumes the ABSENCE of freeze-thaw, and Reno does not grant that. Water gets into the surface, freezes, and spalls it. Nevada’s standing adobe is almost all protected by a plaster render and a wide roof overhang — stabilised or rendered earth solves the problem and bare mud brick does not. Plus the one nobody calls a technology: the cottonwood row. Every ranch in the state is visible from miles off by its line of cottonwoods — shade on the south and west, windbreak to the north, and DECIDUOUS, so it shades in summer and lets the sun through in winter. That is the seasonal behaviour you actually want and no fixed screen achieves it. The Great Basin’s mashrabiya is a tree. And the loop closes on the present: the reason free cooling works at the Storey County data centres is cool nights, low humidity and a large diurnal swing — the adobe house and the hyperscale hall are exploiting the identical physical resource. ⚠ But the best sentence in this chapter must not rest on its weakest link. The PHYSICS is settled; the ATTRIBUTION is not. This volume’s own earlier finding was that what actually won those tenants was permitting speed under the 1999 ordinance, plus contiguous private land sitting in the corridor. Climate is a real reason the cooling is cheap; it is not established as the reason they came. The honest form is: the climate is why the cooling works, the ordinance is why they came — and both are Nevada selling what it has.
Diurnal swing of 30–40°F and 8–10% RH; evaporative cooling efficiency and nocturnal radiative cooling both depend directly on low humidity and clear skies. TWO TECHNICAL POINTS worth more than the rest: ⚠ insulate heavily and put the MASS INSIDE the insulation — mass outboard of insulation is a liability in a cold winter, and that is exactly where naive adobe fails at this latitude. And Reno has a resource almost no American city has: the Moana field in the south-west of the city runs DIRECT-USE geothermal — hot water out of the ground into radiators, no electricity in between — which addresses the heating-dominated half that Egyptian design simply ignores. 🔴 TWO CONSTRAINTS EGYPT NEVER HAD, and the first is the bigger change from historic practice: SMOKE SEASON breaks any strategy built on opening the house at night, so a serious design here needs a sealed mode with filtered mechanical ventilation and heat recovery — the passive scheme must have a closed fallback. And WATER LAW: Nevada is a prior-appropriation state, so rain falling on a roof is arguably already appropriated downstream. Limited residential rooftop capture has been loosened in recent years but check the current statute, and check the separate greywater rules, before designing around either. Which is the joke at the end of this volume: you can manipulate heat, light and air on your own property with nothing but geometry and no one’s permission. The one element you cannot design around is the one the desert never had.

The crust here was pulled apart, and it broke into more than thirty roughly parallel mountain ranges, all running north to south, separated by flat valleys. Travel north or south and you follow easy ground the whole way. Travel east or west — which is where everybody was going — and you climb every single range in turn.
why it is Nevada’s This is the fact the entire page turns on, and it sits underneath everything else. The Humboldt is the only river in the Great Basin that runs west far enough to matter, and it cuts through the ranges rather than going around them. So there was never a second option: the emigrant trail, the Pony Express relay, the Central Pacific, US 40 and Interstate 80 all lie on one line because the geology permitted exactly one. Every later chapter — the towns, the railroad, the industrial park in Storey County — is laid on a corridor that was chosen before there was anyone here to choose it.
