The matchup behind the play

A Rams-led study of how personnel, protection and coverage shape each other. Historical examples connect the Greatest Show on Turf, McVay’s offenses and defenses built to answer them.

1999 Rams → McVay

Different offenses, connected threats

The published account

The Rams’ retrospective describes Martz stretching the field with Bruce, Holt and Faulk, while the line carried the burden of longer-developing passes. Early McVay supplied a different route to conflict through personnel, formation and run presentation.

Our reading

The comparison is about making defenders choose between credible threats. It does not establish that the systems were identical or that one would dominate another era.

Personnel could choose the matchup

The published account

The Rams’ published account describes heavy personnel shifting into an empty backfield: Gurley drew an outside corner while Woods matched up with Anthony Barr on a seam route.

Our reading

The receiving back affected the defense even when another player became the target. The alignment created an opportunity; the throw still had to arrive.

Bruce and Holt → Britt → Woods, Cooks, Kupp and Puka

A receiver’s work reaches beyond his target

The published account

Britt’s 2016 receiving line was 68 catches, 1,002 yards and five touchdowns. In a different offense two years later, Woods moved into Kupp’s role against Seattle after injuries. McVay credited his understanding of the complete combinations and blocking responsibilities.

Our reading

The lineage includes individual production and the ability to preserve an offense when assignments change. Kupp’s teaching of timing and leverage to Puka adds another connection across the groups.

Kupp’s peak, and the work around it

The published account

Kupp’s receiving triple crown comprised 145 receptions, 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. His earlier rehabilitation account and later teaching role add context to a career remembered for that peak.

Our reading

The production is recorded. The broader football lesson is shared understanding: a receiver and quarterback must agree on the answer when the defense changes its presentation.

2006 · 2010–2014 Rams

Jackson was more than the rushing milestone

The published account

In 2006, Jackson paired 1,528 rushing yards with 90 catches for 806 receiving yards. Bradford’s later passing averages improved in 2012; they do not support a simple story of the deep ball steadily disappearing.

Our reading

Protection, receiving options, changing systems and the quarterback’s decisions belong in the explanation together. Receiving totals and passing averages cannot identify the routes that were called.

Goff’s price and Goff’s support are separate questions

The published account

The move for the first overall pick cost the Rams picks across two drafts, with fourth- and sixth-round choices also coming back. Whitworth, Sullivan, Woods and Kupp arrived for McVay’s first season. Cooks followed in 2018.

Our reading

The offensive line and receiving assignments changed the conditions around the quarterback. The subsequent improvement deserves recognition without erasing the original acquisition cost.

2008 Titans → Fisher’s Rams

Aggression begins with the front’s job

The published account

Tennessee’s contemporary account describes Jim Washburn’s linemen attacking off the ball and controlling gaps, supported by the defenders behind them. Finnegan was one of several players and coaches with Tennessee connections who later joined Fisher in St. Louis.

Our reading

The useful continuity is in responsibilities and teaching relationships. It does not prove the Rams copied one fixed Titans scheme.

Denver and Oakland: two different statements

The published account

The Rams beat Denver 22–7 on November 16 and Oakland 52–0 on November 30. The shutout belongs to the Raiders game.

Our reading

Both results belong in Fisher’s history. Neither score, by itself, explains a coverage or establishes how reliably the team could repeat that performance.

Spagnuolo: follow the responsibility behind the pressure

The published account

Spagnuolo’s Rams tenure precedes the later Kansas City defense examined in Diante Lee’s reporting. Those interviews describe adaptable defensive-back responsibilities and concealed pressure sources.

Our reading

That later work provides a useful comparison in how a defense stresses protection. It cannot identify what Spagnuolo called on an earlier Rams snap.

An excellent defensive roster still needed its offense

The published account

Ramsey and Bouye’s outside coverage complemented Campbell, Ngakoue, Jackson and Fowler up front, with Smith, Jack and Posluszny supplying different linebacker responsibilities. Jacksonville beat Pittsburgh 45–42 in the divisional playoff.

Our reading

Disruptive plays helped create the lead, but Pittsburgh kept answering and Jacksonville’s offense had to finish. The result supports a story of complementary contributions, not the claim that the passing game was erased.

The same player can create a different choice

The published account

The Rams later used Ramsey both outside and in the movable star role. A 2019 account describes Fowler’s pressure working alongside Donald’s interior threat.

Our reading

A player’s surroundings and responsibilities matter. Jacksonville’s partnership with Bouye deserves its own credit, just as the later Rams structure does.

The tight end changes what the formation can mean

The published account

The Rams documented Ferguson’s slot fade and check-release work in the 2025 preseason, then linked his growth to multi-tight-end formations. The Raiders’ 2026 coaches discussed the possibilities of Bowers and Mayer; McBride supplies a separate Arizona comparison.

Our reading

A tight end who can credibly block and threaten space gives a coordinator more choices from a familiar grouping. Those possibilities should be distinguished from measured efficiency or a prediction of an elite career.
